For seven decades, the Cavern Club in Liverpool has been a pilgrimage site for music fans around the world. Tucked away beneath Mathew Street, this legendary venue has become a cornerstone of global music culture.

Now, a new exhibition, "70 Years of the Cavern Club," is set to open at the Museum of Liverpool in 2027 to celebrate the club’s extraordinary journey and its profound cultural legacy. The exhibition, created in collaboration with the club itself, chronicles its evolution from a modest post-war jazz cellar to a world-renowned live music venue. Founded by Alan Sytner on January 16, 1957, the club was initially a jazz-focused space before pivoting to host the sounds that would eventually define the Merseybeat era.

Central to the exhibition is the club's inextricable link to the rise of The Beatles. Iconic members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr all performed at the venue early in their careers. The Cavern provided a crucial platform for the band to develop their sound and style, eventually serving as their home base during their ascent to worldwide stardom. The exhibition explores how the club mirrored Liverpool’s own narrative, reflecting the city’s social, cultural, and economic shifts over the last 70 years.

It also highlights the array of legendary artists who graced the stage, including Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Elton John, Oasis, Adele, the Arctic Monkeys, and Jamie Webster. By documenting these performances, the exhibition reinforces the venue’s enduring reputation as a vital hub for live music. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the story of the club, from its humble beginnings to its status as a global landmark. The "70 Years of the Cavern Club" exhibition will be open to the public at the Museum of Liverpool from January 16 through October 31, 2027.
