More than 60 works by Leonard McComb are on display at the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum. The exhibition explores the artist’s work and his ecological outlook.
The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Birkenhead has unveiled "Leonard McComb: Nature and Humanity," the largest exhibition of the artist’s work ever held. The display features more than 60 pieces spanning various mediums, including painting, drawing, watercolor, and sculpture. These works have been drawn from the artist’s estate, as well as public and private collections, providing a comprehensive overview of McComb’s artistic career from 1930 to 2018.
The exhibition occupies three distinct gallery spaces, made possible by support from the Western Loan Program through Art Fund. Josh Mackarell, the curator of the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, explains that this support allowed the museum to secure monumental pieces for the show. Among the highlights is "Rock and Sea, Anglesey," which holds the distinction of being the largest drawing in any public collection in the UK.
McComb’s work reflects an ecological outlook that emphasizes the beauty, energy, and interconnectedness of all life. This perspective is visible across his portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and sculptures. According to Mackarell, while many of McComb’s contemporaries adopted a grim and dark outlook, McComb’s work is characterized by a positive focus on the interconnectedness of all things and humanity at its best. A key example is one of his iconic sculptures, which features one fist closed and one hand open, symbolizing both the human capacity for destruction and for creating beautiful things.
The exhibition is deeply rooted in family ties, as the majority of the works on display are on loan from the artist’s estate, represented by his sister, Anne. This familial connection lends a unique character to the collection. The exhibition serves as a tribute to an artist who received significant acclaim throughout his career and whose environmental outlook continues to hold relevance in modern debates. "Leonard McComb: Nature and Humanity" will remain on display at the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum until October 31st.
