New analysis of government data compares young adults with previous generations on housing, jobs and wages. The findings highlight changing financial challenges facing people starting adult life.
Generations have long held an expectation that each incoming age group would enjoy greater opportunities than their predecessors. However, recent analysis conducted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies indicates that progress has slowed considerably for modern young adults. To understand if today's youth are facing a tougher transition to adulthood, citizens in Liverpool were asked for their perspectives on these challenges. Interviewees shared a range of concerns, noting that the difficulties are multifaceted.
For some, the path to adulthood is complicated by personal responsibilities, such as caregiving for the elderly, while others highlighted the intense pressure to maintain an image of perfection in an increasingly curated online world. One resident noted that constant exposure to idealized lifestyles online can lead to feelings of misery and makes it difficult to focus on personal well-being. A father expressed his concern regarding the job market, noting that his son, despite having a degree in cybersecurity and carrying significant debt, has struggled to find suitable employment after multiple unsuccessful interviews.
He lamented, "I'm beginning to wonder, was education in college a good thing now? I don't know." This sentiment is shared by others who observe that even those with university qualifications find themselves working in entry-level positions that do not reflect their level of education. Beyond employment, the rising cost of living is a major burden. One resident pointed out that their rent is set to increase to £880 per month, highlighting the precarious nature of housing.
Additionally, the availability of affordable housing remains a point of frustration, as the supply of homes designated for rent-to-buy programs is often insufficient to meet demand. Despite these systemic challenges, there remains a belief that personal effort and a solid foundation are crucial to navigating these difficulties. One interviewee remarked, "If you put enough effort in, you get what you achieve."
Nevertheless, the prevailing view among those interviewed is that today’s young adults are navigating a significantly more difficult landscape than previous generations, marked by economic instability, intense societal pressures, and a daunting job market.
