St Helens Town Centre has officially launched a significant regeneration program designed to modernize the area and combat long-standing economic challenges. Supported by the St Helens Council and the English Cities Fund, the project prioritizes the revitalization of both St Helens and Earlstown town centres to create a more vibrant, sustainable environment for residents and businesses.
The ambitious redevelopment, which carries a total budget of 127 million pounds, represents a major collaborative investment. Funding for the project comes from three primary sources: 72 million pounds from the council, 31 million pounds from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority for transport infrastructure, and 12 million pounds from private and government sources, including town deal grants.
Construction efforts are already underway, with the demolition of the Hardshaw Centre having been completed to facilitate site preparation and enable the first phase of the development.
Phase one of the project is comprehensive in scope, featuring the construction of a new market hall, a hotel, office spaces, residential units, and an extended bus station. These facilities are intended to serve as cornerstones for the town's future economic growth and improved accessibility. Councillor Anthony Burns emphasized the project's broader impact, confirming that the initiative is expected to deliver long-term social, economic, and employment benefits to the area.
To ensure the process is managed effectively, the council has committed to ongoing community engagement, maintaining active communication with local businesses and residents to mitigate potential disruptions during construction. While the project is currently scheduled for completion by the summer of 2028, officials have noted that some sectional openings, such as the transport interchange, may occur ahead of that deadline.
