Liverpool’s new twenty six million pound Mersey Ferry, Royal Daffodil, is preparing to welcome its first passengers, subject to final certification and safety checks. Built at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, the vessel is due to enter passenger service in October, with a formal naming ceremony planned for September and a special sailing also scheduled.
A new ferry is nearing completion for operations on the River Mersey, representing a significant milestone for local transport. As the first vessel specifically built for this service since the 1960s, the Royal Daffodil was constructed by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead and represents a modernized approach to the ferry service.
The 26 million-pound vessel was confirmed in 2023, with construction beginning in late 2024. Following successful water tests, the ferry is currently undergoing a readiness process before it can begin passenger operations. The vessel remains subject to official certification and crew assessments to ensure safety and compliance.
A formal naming ceremony for the ship is scheduled for September 22, to be followed by a special sailing on September 29. While passenger service is currently planned to commence in October, the timeline remains dependent on maritime regulations, Coastguard agency certification, and final crew evaluations.
The introduction of the Royal Daffodil is intended to increase passenger numbers and expand cruise options on the Mersey. This development comes after the Royal Iris of the Mersey ended its over 60-year tenure in service this past March. The new vessel is designed to be interchangeable with existing craft, strengthening the resilience of the ferry service while supporting reliable operations.
Beyond the immediate launch, the ferry service is preparing for further investment. Planned work for the fleet includes ongoing maintenance, improvements to passenger areas and accessibility, and a comprehensive overhaul of the main engines. While recent infrastructure projects, such as the renewal of landing stages and the Lyncspan bridge, have been completed, a firm return date for all services has yet to be finalized.
