Megan Taylor began using ketamine at age 18, a habit that quickly spiraled from recreational use at parties into a debilitating addiction. At the height of her struggle, Taylor became so dependent on the substance that she was unable to perform basic daily activities such as eating, showering, or getting out of bed. By early 2023, her condition had deteriorated significantly; she was consuming up to 40 lines of the drug daily, her weight had plummeted from 10 stone to just four, and she was experiencing severe health complications, including bladder problems, chest pain, and internal bleeding.

During this time, Taylor spent thousands of pounds annually on the drug. She noted that while she initially believed the substance offered a form of escape, it ultimately became a constant, destructive presence in her life. For nearly two and a half years, her addiction remained largely hidden from her family. Her mother, Angela Taylor, did not become aware of the severity of the situation until May 2023. Even after the discovery, Taylor continued to struggle with her addiction for another two years, during which time her mother feared for her life and even began making arrangements for her daughter's funeral.

The turning point in Taylor's recovery occurred in May 2025, after she passed a large, golf-ball-sized piece of bladder tissue. This physical trauma, combined with medical warnings that she had potentially only months to live, finally prompted her to stop. She subsequently completed a week-long detox program and became involved with a recovery community hub, which she credits with helping her regain control of her life. Now over a year sober, Taylor reports that her physical health is healing and she is dedicating her time to supporting others through recovery sessions.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Angela Taylor emphasized the profound and heartbreaking toll that substance abuse takes on families, noting that parents often struggle to recognize the warning signs until it is too late. She urges parents to be vigilant for symptoms such as frequent bathroom use, the use of water bottles to manage abdominal pain, and overall physical decline. Both Megan and Angela hope that by sharing their story, they can raise awareness about the dangers of ketamine addiction and encourage others struggling to seek help as early as possible.
