Liverpool and Juventus have come together to unveil a new Heysel memorial marking 41 years since the disaster. Club leaders and former players paid tribute during a ceremony of remembrance.
Liverpool Football Club has unveiled a new memorial to commemorate the 39 individuals who lost their lives in the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster. The sculpture, titled "Forever Bound," marks the 41st anniversary of the tragedy, which occurred when a stadium wall collapsed during clashes between rival supporters before the European Cup final in Brussels. The new memorial features two scarves tied together, symbolizing the bond between the two clubs and including the names of the victims. Billy Hogan, Chief Executive of Liverpool FC, explained that discussions regarding a more appropriate location and reimagining of the memorial began over a year ago.
Hogan stated that the initiative came from supporters and fan groups. "I think what we see today is, number one, a beautiful memorial, and something that provides our fans and fans of other clubs, and generally a place to come and show their respect and to remember those lives that were lost," said Hogan.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by representatives from both Liverpool and Juventus, reflecting the relationship that has developed between the two clubs in the years since the tragedy.
Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush, who played in the 1985 final and later spent a season with Juventus, also attended the event. Rush emphasized the importance of both clubs continuing to come together in remembrance, adding that younger generations need to understand what happened and why it remains significant today. The ceremony included the laying of wreaths by representatives of both clubs alongside Liverpool civic dignitaries and a moment of silence to honor the victims. Hogan reiterated the club's commitment to ensuring such a tragedy is never forgotten, highlighting that the memorial serves as a dedicated space to show respect and remember those lost.
