More than 85% of people responding to a consultation support plans for a new Mayoral Development Corporation covering Liverpool’s North Docks. The proposed body could help accelerate regeneration across a major waterfront area, with ambitions for thousands of new homes, jobs, businesses and public spaces.
Plans to establish a mayoral development corporation in Liverpool have taken a significant step forward following positive results from a six-week public consultation. The initiative, which aims to drive large-scale regeneration across 174 hectares of land stretching from Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium to the city center, received a favorable response from local residents, with over 85% of the 537 respondents expressing support for the proposal.
The development corporation is intended to tackle long-standing obstacles to regional growth, including fragmented land ownership, aging infrastructure, and rising development costs.
By coordinating regeneration efforts on a broader scale, the body seeks to unlock the potential of underutilized areas. The consultation process highlighted strong backing for the corporation’s proposed powers, with nearly 80% of participants supporting the move to grant the organization local planning authority over major projects.
Additionally, 72% of respondents endorsed the proposed geographical boundary, while nearly 70% supported the name of the corporation. The results of this feedback phase are currently under review by the combined authority’s overview and scrutiny committee. A formal proposal for the development corporation is scheduled for consideration by the combined authority on September 25. Should the board approve the motion, the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region will formally request that the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government establish the body.
If the government provides its approval, this would be the first mayoral development corporation in the city region. The project’s overarching goal is to transform brownfield land into vibrant, functional spaces. The ambitious vision for this regeneration includes support for up to 17,000 new homes alongside a significant expansion of commercial space. Officials emphasized that community engagement remains a priority and that residents will continue to be involved as the development plans evolve.
