Changes to city centre parking, including extended hours and higher charges, are generating increased revenue while officials plan further modernisation.
Liverpool Council has reported initial growth in revenue following the implementation of new parking measures in the city center. These changes include extending parking charges until 11:00 p.m. across on-street controlled parking zones and increasing rates by up to 20% in certain areas. Beginning in April, the cost for a 30-minute stay rose from £2.00 to £2.30, while a one-hour stay increased from £4.00 to £4.40. A two-hour stay now ranges from £6.00 to £6.50. Maximum stay durations are set at four hours before 6:00 p.m. and increase to five hours afterward.
Several council-owned parking facilities, such as Mount Pleasant, Victoria Street, the M&S Bank Arena, and Paddington Village, will also see price increases averaging 8%. Finance Director Ian Williams stated that these incremental changes are delivering double-digit collection increases compared to previous periods. He further noted that app and meter improvements are making enforcement and data collection more efficient. Councillor Ruth Bennett, Deputy Leader, highlighted investments in new wardens and modern equipment to improve deployment and monitoring. Council Leader Liam Robinson noted that traffic flows remain stable, suggesting that drivers are adapting to the changes without avoiding the city center.
Officials plan to implement further enhancements at key locations, including Mount Pleasant, to maintain cost-effective parking and remain competitive against private operators. Overall, the council maintains that the charges remain competitive, and these combined measures aim to balance revenue generation with user needs.
