Several car washes and a takeaway in Liverpool and Sefton faced penalties after employing people without the right to work in the UK, highlighting ongoing enforcement by the Home Office.
Between January and March of last year, Home Office officials identified and sanctioned several businesses within the Liverpool City Region for employing individuals who lacked the legal right to work in the United Kingdom. Among those sanctioned were five hand car washes in Liverpool and Bootle, along with one takeaway in Toxteth. These enforcement actions resulted in total fines exceeding £300,000, with individual penalties ranging from £40,000 to £90,000.
The scale of the penalties varied by establishment. Green Lane Hand Car Wash in Tuebrook and Euro Hand Car Wash and Valeting Service Center in Broad Green were each fined £40,000. Capital Auto Wash and Lodge Lane Hand Car Wash also faced sanctions, with total fines amounting to £55,000. Super Shine Hand Car Wash in Bootle received the most significant penalty, incurring a £90,000 civil fine after being found to have employed two individuals without the necessary authorization to work in the country.
A Home Office spokesperson emphasized the broader implications of these enforcement efforts, stating that illegal working undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages, and fuels organized immigration crime. The spokesperson further noted that enforcement activity has increased nationwide, citing a 63 percent rise in illegal working arrests since the current government took office. Officials have indicated that enforcement actions will continue throughout the coming year to ensure ongoing compliance. These measures, according to the Home Office, reflect a dedicated focus on protecting workers and upholding immigration law across the region.
