A new funding package of £380 million has been announced for the Liverpool City Region, aimed at accelerating the construction of approximately 3,100 new homes. This allocation is part of the central government's wider £39 billion social and affordable homes program, which intends to support more than 70,000 council, social, and affordable housing units across England. The announcement follows a commitment from the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State, Angela Rayner, to provide nearly £10 billion in funding for the program's initial wave.
The Liverpool City Region Council leader, Liam Robinson, welcomed the investment, highlighting the critical and growing demand for social housing in the area. Robinson noted that pressure on temporary accommodation remains significant and that this funding is a necessary step to address ongoing housing needs.
According to the council leader, local authorities are already actively working to increase the supply of housing through various initiatives. These efforts include bringing long-term vacant homes back into use, supporting new construction on smaller sites, unlocking stalled development projects, and collaborating with housing associations to boost the availability of affordable homes. The government's program is designed to support families currently in temporary accommodation or those awaiting placement in safe and secure housing. By prioritizing these initiatives, the funding seeks to address immediate housing instability while contributing to long-term improvements in housing availability for both individual families and the wider community.
