Liverpool City Council says Liverpool John Lennon Airport should be supported to grow as part of the city’s long-term ambitions, while protecting nearby green spaces and meeting its environmental commitments.
Liverpool City Council is currently drafting an ambitious long-term development plan for the city through the year 2043. A central component of this strategy involves the potential expansion of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which officials argue is vital for accommodating an expected population increase of over 70,000 residents in the coming years. As the council navigates these development projections, the airport's role in the regional economy has moved to the forefront of local policy discussions. Councillor Nick Small, the cabinet member for growth and economy, emphasized the importance of this development, stating that the airport needs to expand to meet future city needs.
Small noted that the facility is currently operating at its base capacity, which he defined by the number of aircraft based there overnight. While expansion is a key objective, Small clarified that there are no current plans to introduce additional nighttime flights.
Instead, the focus for the airport's evolution centers on supporting increased aircraft movement and upgrading existing infrastructure to allow airlines to add new routes. Despite these ambitious growth goals, the council maintains a cautious approach to development. Small stressed that any expansion must be carefully balanced with environmental responsibilities. This includes protecting Oglet Shore, a nearby agricultural and coastal area, and ensuring that all development aligns with the council’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
Currently, Liverpool City Council holds a 5% stake in the airport, having reduced its initial 10% share in 2022. This ongoing investment reflects the city's strategic interest in maintaining a functional, efficient airport that serves as a cornerstone of the broader local growth plan.
