Former footballer denies GBH charges following Merseyside golf club incident
Joey Barton, 43, a former Widnes football player, is facing a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent against Kevin Lynch. The alleged incident occurred on March 8 at the Heaton and Prestwich Golf Club.
Court records indicate that Barton and a co-defendant, 50-year-old Gary O'Grady, were drinking with Lynch prior to the alleged assault. Lynch is reported to have sustained severe injuries to his eye during the altercation, which hospital staff described as serious.
At a previous magistrate's hearing, Barton, whose professional history includes stints with Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, was denied bail. He has been remanded in custody and is expected to stand trial for seven days, beginning September 1. O'Grady also appeared in court, though he did not enter a plea.
