Cheshire Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service urge families to ensure young people ride e-bikes safely, legally, and responsibly.
Cheshire Constabulary, in collaboration with the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, has launched a new campaign focused on ensuring the responsible use of e-bikes and e-scooters. The initiative comes amid rising concerns regarding illegal vehicle modifications and the use of non-compliant models on public roads, which require proper licensing, insurance, and the use of safety equipment like helmets. Under the current safety guidelines, officers are authorized to seize non-compliant bikes, and riders found in violation could face fines or receive points on their driving licenses.
The fire service has also issued specific warnings regarding lithium-ion batteries. They cautioned against charging these batteries in exit routes or leaving them unsupervised during charging, while also highlighting the dangers of tampering with them. Families are being advised to purchase equipment only from reputable retailers and to ensure that any necessary repairs are conducted by professionals.
According to local residents, the issue extends to the behavior of riders in city centers. One resident, who cycles himself, noted that e-bikes can be useful for individuals who are not strong enough to cycle normally or who are recovering from illness.
However, he emphasized that those who use them often seem to lack awareness of their surroundings. Other members of the public expressed more critical views, suggesting that these vehicles should be banned from roads and sidewalks due to safety risks. Another resident described the chaotic presence of e-scooters, noting that they are often left in hazardous locations where pedestrians might trip over them, especially after dark. While the primary goal of the new campaign is to educate rather than penalize, authorities intend to prioritize public safety.
They are encouraging a dialogue between guardians and young riders to emphasize the importance of lawful and considerate behavior. This effort is part of a wider outreach program designed to reduce accidents, support safe enjoyment of these vehicles, and maintain public confidence.
