Liverpool’s dot-art celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026 with events, exhibitions, and a reflection on two decades of supporting artists and communities.
Since its inception 20 years ago, dot-art has worked to bolster the artistic landscape of the Liverpool city region by supporting local talent and fostering creative engagement. The organization, founded by Lucy Byrne, serves as a platform that bridges the gap between emerging artists and the public, facilitating the sale of accessible, locally-sourced artwork to businesses and private buyers. Byrne, who originally studied art history in Liverpool, established the organization after noticing a lack of opportunities for artists to sell their work and for the public to purchase affordable pieces.
Over the past two decades, the organization has navigated numerous challenges, prioritizing its mission of integrating art into daily life. Today, dot-art supports over 600 artists and has delivered more than 30,000 hours of creative teaching. One of the organization's most impactful initiatives is its work with local youth. Through the dot-art Schools program, it has engaged more than 21,000 school children, partnering with up to 100 schools across the region annually. This focus on education and social value, which Byrne estimates has generated approximately £5 million for the community, remains central to their operations.
In 2021, the organization expanded its reach by launching 'art bites,' a national program inspired by the success of its local initiatives. To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026, dot-art is highlighting the long-term impact of its efforts on the local art scene. The organization has recently curated two special exhibitions to mark this milestone. The first, titled '20,' is held at the Inside Hotel on Old Hall Street and features a large-scale collaboration from 20 of its member artists.
The second exhibition, '20 by 20,' takes place at the dot-art Gallery and showcases pieces created by 80 artists, specifically commissioned to measure exactly 20 by 20 centimeters. Looking ahead, dot-art remains committed to providing high-quality exhibitions, community murals, and educational projects. By continuing to prioritize accessibility and nurture emerging talent, the organization aims to ensure that visual art continues to be a vital, accessible component of life in Liverpool.
