Merseyrail has announced a new safety policy that will ban non-folding electric bicycles from its network, including trains and station facilities. This measure, which follows a comprehensive safety review, is designed to mitigate the risks associated with e-bike battery fires, which officials state can escalate rapidly. In an enclosed railway environment, such an incident could have severe consequences for both passengers and infrastructure. The policy will officially take effect on January 1, 2027, to allow commuters time to adjust. After this date, passengers attempting to bring non-folding e-bikes onto the network may be refused entry or face enforcement action under existing railway bylaws.
Folding e-bikes, standard bicycles, and approved mobility aids will continue to be permitted on the network. E-scooters, which were not part of this specific announcement, have already been banned from Merseyrail services since 2023. The decision has drawn criticism from Cycling UK, which is challenging the move, arguing that it could negatively impact passenger independence, increase social isolation, and hinder the ability of some commuters to travel to work or attend appointments. The charity has requested a meeting with Merseyrail to discuss the safety review and seek clarification on the consultation process.
Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram acknowledged the concerns of commuters and suggested that Merseyrail should reconsider whether a total ban is necessary. In response to the backlash, Merseyrail stated that the multi-year implementation window is intended to prioritize public awareness and provide ample preparation time for affected riders.
