Plans to secure UNESCO status for Birkenhead Park have received a funding boost to develop a long-term vision. Community engagement and research will help shape the park’s future direction.
Birkenhead Park is the subject of a comprehensive new initiative designed to shape its development for the coming decades. Supported by a total project value of 227,700 pounds, the park aims to leverage this funding to implement a forward-looking strategy that prioritizes long-term improvement over immediate physical upgrades. The funding includes 177,700 pounds from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, supplemented by an additional 50,000 pounds from the local council. This financial backing is part of a larger, ongoing effort to secure UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the park, reflecting its status as one of the region's most significant green spaces.
The master plan focuses on developing a sustainable framework, with a heavy emphasis on community engagement. As part of this process, the initiative will include detailed building and landscape surveys, alongside dedicated efforts to explore biodiversity enhancements and environmental sustainability. Public consultation will serve as a cornerstone of the project, allowing the organizers to evaluate current visitor usage and identify potential opportunities for health and wellbeing activities, environmental education, and volunteer programs. To gain a clearer understanding of how the park is currently being used and to address potential barriers to access, the project will also introduce automated visitor counters and audience research.
These insights will be instrumental in informing future investment decisions and identifying essential long-term improvements. According to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this master plan represents a critical step in supporting future applications for further investment, which may eventually include large-scale restoration work should additional funding become available.
