The play chronicles his progression from a young fighter in Kirby to his victories in the Commonwealth Games, eventually culminating in his success as a world light-heavyweight champion.
The production was developed from a concept that began backstage during a performance of 'Boys from the Blackstuff' and was written by actor Aron Julius, who also performs the lead role of Conteh. Julius notes the intensity of portraying such an iconic figure, explaining that he felt a strong sense of the boxer's presence throughout the creative process.
The show aims to present a comprehensive view of Conteh’s life, acknowledging that while his professional career was defined by major sporting triumphs, he also contended with personal challenges and the complexities of public perception. Producers stated that the play utilizes both professional achievements and private moments to provide audiences with a clearer understanding of a significant figure in Liverpool's sporting history.
