A new show at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre sees Adam McCoy’s characters come to life in his debut production. Take Me Home County Road celebrates community, music and the people who make a place feel like home.
A new stage comedy, Take Me Home County Road, has made its debut at Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre. Written by Adam McCoy, who marks his debut as a playwright for the theatre, the production explores the themes of family, nostalgia, and the enduring influence of music on personal growth. The show focuses on the life of Shelly, portrayed by Helen Carter, a woman from a Country Road background. As she navigates her forties surrounded by long-time friends and family, she begins to reflect on her past ambitions and whether the dreams she once held still have a place in her life.
For McCoy, the inspiration for the show stemmed from his own upbringing in a family shaped by strong, matriarchal figures who had a deep love for artists like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, and Shania Twain. These women and their musical preferences became the foundation for his storytelling. “I think they’re really good storytelling songs, and I just think it felt right to put them into the world of Country Road in Liverpool,” McCoy explained. The playwright noted that he viewed the songs as the primary inspiration for the narrative, allowing him to weave them into the characters' experiences.
Carter describes the play as a “feel-good, joyous show” that is deeply grounded in love. She highlights how the production celebrates connections between people—both those present and those who have passed—as well as a shared love for singing. “There’s so much love on that stage, and I just think it all radiates to the audience,” she said. Throughout the development process, McCoy found that music served as a crucial element in building the story, allowing him to collaborate effectively with the director and the production’s creative team.
The project has also been a meaningful experience for the writer, who views the stage as a second home and expresses deep gratitude for the opportunity to share his work with a supportive and loyal audience. Take Me Home County Road is currently running at Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre and will be available to audiences through August 29.
