A man accused of abusing Antoine Semenyo at Anfield will face further assessment before trial. The case has been delayed until September while medical evidence is reviewed.
The trial of Mark Mogan, 47, has been adjourned at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court. Mogan is accused of racially aggravated behavior toward footballer Antoine Semenyo during a match at Anfield in August. The court process is currently on hold while authorities determine whether the defendant is fit to stand trial.
According to defense counsel Olivia Bell, Mogan, who suffers from cerebral palsy, has been examined by a psychiatric expert. This expert concluded that the defendant is currently unfit to plead or stand trial, citing a complex medical presentation alongside significant language and communication difficulties. Although Mogan was expected to provide evidence, the court informed witnesses that they were no longer required to appear once it became evident the trial would not proceed as scheduled. District Judge James Hatton has adjourned the case until September.
This delay will allow the prosecution to obtain their own psychiatric report regarding the defendant's condition. While released on bail, Mogan is subject to strict conditions. He is prohibited from contacting Semenyo, attending any regulated football matches, or entering within a one-mile radius of Premier League or Football League grounds around the time of any games. The initial incident occurred during a Premier League match between Liverpool and Bournemouth on August 15. The match was briefly halted by referee Anthony Taylor in the 29th minute after a Bournemouth player reported the abuse.
A spectator was subsequently ejected from the stadium. Semenyo, who has since signed with Manchester City, ultimately played a significant role in the match, scoring twice in the second half. Despite the disruptions, Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth.
