We’re at Liverpool’s Royal Court where a new production revisits the history of the Kirkby ski slope built in the 1970s.
Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre is currently staging "Taking the Piste," a play based on the true story of the Kirby Ski Slope. The 1970s local authority project famously cost 140,000 pounds and was built without proper planning permission before being demolished within a decade due to safety concerns. The production, written by Kieran Lynn, explores how the ill-fated scheme was developed during a period of regeneration ambition in the town. "I was looking for stories that I felt would resonate around the city, and when I found the ski slope, it had everything I was looking for," said Lynn.
"It's really funny, kind of unbelievable, but also, because it's about corrupt politicians, slightly believable where we're at at the moment." Beyond the humor, the play serves as a critique of historical and contemporary political behavior and the role of the news media in reporting—or failing to report—on such matters. The narrative highlights the challenges and corruption surrounding the project, including reports of construction issues and questions regarding oversight from various stakeholders. The council-backed project ultimately led to legal consequences for several individuals involved, including the main contractor and borough architect, who were jailed for fraud.
Actor Elliot Kingsley, who portrays the character Derek, noted that the real events were even more bizarre than what is presented on stage. "Kieran and the writers had to chop out bits because it would sound too crazy," Kingsley explained. The production also features a veteran cast, including Haley Sheen, Mickey Starke, Paul Duckworth, and Vicky Bynes. Actor Holly Mimi Bernice, who plays Sandra, noted the personal significance of the project, stating, "I worked here seven years ago as a waitress and I absolutely loved it.
So it just feels really special to be on the main stage." The play aims to balance entertainment with thoughtful commentary, hoping audiences leave with more than just a laugh. "Taking the Piste" runs at the Royal Court Theatre until July 18th.
